Welcome to Wildcat Glades

The Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center, located in Wildcat Park, Joplin, Missouri, is adjacent to some of the last remaining chert glades, a globally unique habitat found only in this area and the biologically rich Shoal Creek an important place for migratory birds and other wildlife.

The Audubon Center is a partnership project of Audubon Missouri, the City of Joplin and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Opened in 2007, the Center itself is a celebration of nature. Innovative "green" technologies create a truly distinctive building in keeping with our mission of appreciating, conserving and understanding our natural world. The local Missouri Department of Conservation offices are also located on site.

How You Can Help...

All of us at Audubon are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and the impact of the devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri.  More than 60% of Joplin’s schools have been destroyed or damaged, and thousands of homes and other places children go have been decimated in a 13 square mile path of the tornado.  This represents approximately 30% of Joplin.  The toll and reconstruction effort for both people’s lives and the community is massive.  In response to this, the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center has launched Operation Backyard Recovery.

The aim of Operation Backyard Recovery is twofold: First, tailoring our hands-on education programs to incorporate activities to help the community of Joplin experience the healing power of nature. Secondly, building and placement of birdhouses that can provide immediate healing and support for people and for birds that have lost roosting and nesting sites, and the planting of native trees, shrubs, and gardens to restore the quality of urban and suburban habitats for people and wildlife.

The Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center has long partnered with the Joplin region and stands at the ready to help the city—it will take a massive effort to restore this community for people and other wildlife. Please consider joining us and donating to help children and families in the Joplin community cope with this crisis and to help us make our community even more beautiful.
